By Peter Stockwell Topping & Company of Ely, Cambridgeshire, nestles behind one of the last Victorian shopfronts in a street of mobile telephone vendors and superstores. The shop is a delight. Sometimes customers will be offered coffee and biscuits for no apparent reason. One day a large dog appeared to be happily browsing with its owner in the fiction section. The choice of books is vast, the friendliness unending. In the autumn there is the great Topping's lecture series. Such luminaries as Alan Bennett and Sebastian Faulks have spoken and signed books; tickets are never expensive. Go to Ely, admire the cathedral, but most important of all buy a book at Topping & Company. You will be supporting a national treasure.
